Sausage, Egg and Cheese Strata

I could’ve sworn I had posted this recipe before, but dang if I can’t locate it within my archives! No matter, here is my recreation of a Sausage, Egg and Cheese Strata.

Sausage, Egg and Cheese StrataA hearty, cheesy breakfast/brunch dish that feeds an army–Or in my case, a houseful of friends! The occasion? House Party. And the lure of a single-cup brewer in the form of a Tassimo T55 Home Brewing System.

Tassimo T55I’ll be honest–After my Gevalia Party was a bit of a bust, I swore I wasn’t going to try for another House Party. I kind of thought I might have some luck getting selected to host a Tassimo party. I’ve been thinking of purchasing a single-cup brewer for awhile, but it’s been way down on my wish list…One of those, “Well, if I had a bunch of birthday or Christmas money sitting around, and I had nothing else I needed or wanted…” items. A few people I know have Keurigs already, but after looking into the Tassimo, I liked the idea that it makes lattes and cappuccinos and things like that. Not that I’m a huge specialty coffee drinker–I do like my occasional treats from Choco Latte or Cottonwood, but for the most part, a nice strong black cup of coffee is my caffeinated beverage of choice.

I am, however, the only coffee drinker in the house…Unless I have extended family visiting. Jay prefers tea (or soda), and obviously, the bambino’s not ready for coffee quite yet. But the Tassimo is nice because with minimal supervision, the bambino can make his own hot chocolate, and it’s easy enough for Jay to use as well.

But anyway–Part of the requirement for hosting a House Party is to actually have people over to demonstrate whatever item they sent you. Because I got a coffeemaker, I thought I’d do brunch. Hence the strata. And a couple other dishes, including a coffee cake that my guests loved, but I was less than happy with. No matter.

I kept it simple just because I didn’t want to go overboard and wind up with my usual situation of “Holy cow, the guests are arriving and the food’s not done!” That, and my house required some serious deep cleaning, which led to me leaving work an hour early Friday, so I could get it all finished.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 10 slices bread
  • 8 eggs
  • 3 C milk
  • 1 package sausage links (10-12 links-I used Jones Dairy Farm )
  • 2 C shredded cheddar cheese
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9 X 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Cut the bread slices into 1-inch cubes, and place in a large mixing bowl. Cut the sausage links into bite-sized pieces and place into the bowl with the bread cubes.
  3. In another large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and pepper. Pour over the bread cubes and sausage. Add in 1 1/2 C of the cheese, and mix well. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with the other 1/2 C of cheese.
  4. Bake the strata for 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the strata to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.

The thing I like about stratas and egg bakes is that you can customize them however you’d like. Don’t like sausage? Use bacon. Or some of each. Try a different cheese. Use whatever kind of bread you want. Add peppers or onions if you like them. The possibilities are endless!
