A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the folks at Hamilton Beach about reviewing two of their latest products, a 6-Speed SoftScrape Hand Mixer as well as a 6-Speed Stand Mixer:

Hamilton Beach Stand Mixer & Hand Mixer - TramplingroseMany of you already know, I have a stand mixer–A Breville. I know Kitchen Aids are more popular, but I went with a Breville because way back when, I won a juicer from them, so I had some brand loyalty there.

But I also have some brand loyalty to Hamilton Beach. One of my (three!) coffee makers is from them, as is one of my coffee grinders, my toaster, the toaster oven I used to have…I’m sure I could think of more by them that’s in my kitchen. They’re affordable, and they’re good quality. Cheap in price, but not in manufacture, if that makes any sense.

So I tested the items out, making several recipes, to get a good feel for both appliances. The hand mixer, I was actually already somewhat familiar with, as I had a slightly different version (I’ve since given that to my brother-in-law). I actually prefer this one, because while I like the soft-scrape beaters for things like mashed potatoes (I have hard-anodized non-stick cookware), I prefer standard beaters for things like small batches of frosting, which went on my Robin Eggs Brownies for Easter. Or cream cheese filling:

Blueberry Kolaches - TramplingroseYou’ll notice the mixer’s resting on the bowl–It has a special edge just for that purpose, which is nice if you’re doing like I did and checking just how much sugar to add. I also like the snap-on carrying case, which holds the cord as well as the beater attachments. That makes it virtually impossibly for said items to get lost in the void that is my kitchen attachment drawer (the catch-all of measuring spoons, spatulas, knife sharpeners, etc.)

Hamilton Beach Hand Mixer and Case - TramplingroseNow, the first thing you’ll notice about the Stand Mixer is its size, in comparison to my Breville:

And for someone who’s got limited counter space, this would be great. But I was concerned that with the mixing bowl being smaller, I might need to use it for smaller jobs. The HB is also quite a bit lighter, which would come in handy for someone with limited strength. It’s super-easy to lift and move around.

I have said for awhile that with as much baking as I do, especially when I’m baking for other people, a second stand mixer would be a welcome luxury. To test this one, I decided that I’d work it like I do my Breville–If the HB could stand up to the amount of cupcakes that come out of my kitchen, I’d consider it a worthy investment–Especially as it’s quite a bit cheaper than a Kitchen Aid or a Breville. It comes with the same mixing attachments–A dough hook, flat beater and a whisk. It doesn’t offer anything in the way of additional appliance attachments (meat grinder, ice cream maker, etc.) like Kitchen Aid does, but then again, it’s only been in the past year or so that Breville’s been offering a limited selection. So keep that in mind if that’s something you’re interested in down the road.

I made the batter for the Dark Chocolate Cupcakes with Almond Mascarpone Frosting. One feature I really liked right off the bat was the “Fold” setting. It’s a manual setting, which means you have to hold the button for the mixer to keep moving, but for something like cake batter, it’s genius. One feature I didn’t like right off the bat was having to stop and scrape the batter with a spatula every so often. I admit, it’s me simply being spoiled by the scraper blade that came with my Breville.

I also made the dough for the Salted Double Chocolate Toffee Chip Cookies–Another recipe the “Fold” setting came in handy for. And I have to say, I was impressed at how the HB handled mixing in the toffee and chocolate chips. And most recently, I made the Chocolate Cinnamon Soufflé Cake. One other feature I really appreciated is the fact that there are little suction cups along the bottom of the mixer, so it doesn’t “walk” across the counter! I noticed that while making whipped cream–I didn’t have to hold it in place like I do with my regular one.

I should note that I haven’t tested the dough hook yet, so I can’t say how well that holds up, but the flat beater and the whisk attachment work just fine. Overall, and especially for the price, the Hamilton Beach Stand Mixer is great value!

  1. Living in a small house the stand up would work for me with such limited kitchen space. I cook every week to have left overs and bake to save money. Either one would come in handy.

  8. I think I might make that famous Sweet Paul cake that everyone loves. This one: http://www.sweetpaulmag.com/food/worlds-best-cake-from-sweet-paul-eat-amp-make Here's why these are the perfect tools to do it with. The cake has a batter that needs to be mixed and then (immediately) layer of beaten egg white meringue for the top. Having the hand mixer for the second job rather than frantically washing out and drying the mixer bowl and beaters to create the meringue layer (do you have any idea how hard it is to frantically dry beaters?) This would also be true for those occasions when I decide that I must make some more icing when I am in mid-cake decoration.
  9. The first thing I would make is cookies. Then after that I would make some dough. The "goldilocks" temperatures right now really allow the dough to rise well just sitting on the counter.
