Wednesday Wackiness

Today began fairly normally, but in the hour between 3 and 4 this afternoon, things got a little hectic and chaotic. That usually seems to happen to me when I’m trying to get out of work early. Clifford the Big Red Dog was coming to read stories at the bambino’s daycare, and I wanted to go. He was enthralled and entranced by Clifford, and was brave enough that he was the first one to go up and have his picture taken with Clifford. And then he talked about it for the rest of the evening.

We had to run errands after Clifford was done reading stories, so it was off to the Devil and then to Hy-Vee (and STILL there was no Chobani! I’m a little irked at this, and I really hope by Friday, when the bambino & I go grocery shopping, they’ve finally restocked!). Somehow, I was roped into baking some goodies for a Boys & Girls Club tournament this weekend. Supposedly, I volunteered to bring baked goods, but I don’t recall actually committing to bringing baked goods. I copped-out and bought a brownie mix, rather than whipping up something from scratch.

Once we got home, Jay started up the grill, and I got to work on more homemade fries, and some BBQ sauce. I always forget (until after the fact) that my mandoline has a julienne-slicer, but I got that out for this latest batch of fries:

Then I got to work on the BBQ sauce:

I don’t really have a recipe for this…I used about a cup of ketchup (my Muir Glen was about empty, hence the Full Circle ketchup), a 1/4 C of brown sugar, a couple tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, a couple tablespoons of cider vinegar, a tablespoon of ground mustard, roughly a teaspoon each of garlic and onion powders, and a couple dashes of hot sauce (I didn’t want it to be too ‘picy, lest the bambino not eat it):

Then I just whisked it till it was well-combined:

It was slightly tangy and there was a little heat in the aftertaste, and I kind of wanted to marry this stuff. I took half of it out to Jay to baste on the chicken:

Which was delicious. The fries were a little less-than-stellar this time. I wonder if it was because I tossed them in canola oil instead of olive oil. Who knows. Jay & the bambino gobbled them up, so I guess they weren’t too bad! And on that note, I’m off to bed, since I have to get up and wrap the brownies before I take them into work!
