I don’t want to go back to work tomorrow. I’ve enjoyed my 3 days of puttering around the house, being completely lazy, and spending time with Jay & the bambino. That being said, I did bust my ass doing laundry this morning, and had it done before lunch time (although it didn’t actually get fully put away until about 2-ish).
I also futzed around with the blog…Again. I wanted to use the header Jay made for me back during my failed attempt as a Project Food Blog contestant. That, and I just get a bug up my ass every so often about changing the look of my blog. Back when I was at Blog City, I probably did that every 3 or 4 months.
I’m also rather twitchy right now, because we’ve got some severe weather on the way. I’m normally not such a chicken when it comes to thunderstorms or even tornado watches & warnings–In fact, I’ve got a bit of storm-chaser in me! But with all that’s been going on weather-wise in the past month or so, I’m a little more nervous than usual with the line of bad weather headed this way. And I didn’t sleep all that well last night/early this morning, thanks to earlier thunderstorms.
But up until about an hour ago, it was beautiful out. Warmer than I’d like, but it was nice enough that being a holiday and all, we decided to fire up the grill. And this is what I mean when I say I sometimes think I have an unnatural obsession with grocery shopping–We popped back out to the store again, to pick up some smaller steaks, and some brats for Jay.
I also tried my hand at some grilled potatoes. Jay’s mom had given him a cookbook with all sorts of grilling recipes in it, and I was thinking of doing baked potatoes on the grill. The bambino saw me looking through the sides, and suggested I make the wedges.
I split my steak with the bambino, only because I knew he wasn’t going to eat a whole one, and I figured that I could go back for the third one if I was still hungry. As it is, I liked the potatoes most of all, so I filled up on them. The bread was to soak up the garlic-herb butter I basted them in.
While we were at the store, I came across some gorgeous-looking strawberries–Some of the best I’ve ever seen outside of a farmers market. I grabbed a pound of them and decided that strawberry shortcake would be necessary for dessert. Another somewhat light & “fluffy” dessert.
I almost called my mom to get her shortcake recipe then realized I might have my great-grandmother’s recipe. For shortbread, actually. Luckily I found a recipe in my trusty Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. The shortcake was an actual cake (my mom always makes individuals), but that was okay with me, since I was also toying with the idea of making a strawberry cake I’d see on an episode of New Scandinavian Cooking a few years back. I never got around to looking for that recipe until just now, though, so strawberry shortcake it was!
And while it looks and tastes just fine, when I went to slice the cake, I didn’t slice it properly, and the dang thing fell apart. So I just scooped up chunks of the cake, and layered them with the berries and whipped cream. No one complained. As for the rest of it, I just tossed the rest of the cake into the bowl with the berries, plopped the rest of the whipped cream on top & threw it in the fridge. Sort of a make-shift trifle or something.
And since it’s just a matter of time before we get slammed with bad weather (even though I can hear someone in the neighborhood setting off bottle rockets or something), I should probably finish this up & get off the computer for the evening!
