“I need to take leave of my senses to get a moment’s rest…”

I went back to work on Monday…It was a normal day as far as work goes, but I was feeling out of sorts all day long. So much so, that I ended up ordering pizza for dinner instead of actually cooking. That, and while I hadn’t had a bad day, it wasn’t anything spectacular either. I felt completely BLAH all day. I think part of it was just the fact that it really was nice to be on my own time and get done what I wanted to get done when I wanted it done. And I liked spending time in the kitchen. I liked the freedom to start a blog post at 8:30 in the morning and not finish it until 8:30 at night (although I think I only did that once).

And it’s not that I’m trying to whine about having to work. Most days, I do like my job, and there are opportunities (like the bambino’s daycare or our health insurance) that I’m lucky to access. I think it’s just the combination of coming back to work from vacation and being a little tired that made me feel off yesterday. Or I’m just feeling lazy.

As such, whenever I get in moods like this, I want comfort food. I’d taken some ground beef out to thaw and wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do with it. This morning, I decided some S.O.S. was in order (for anyone without a military connection and doesn’t want to click on the link there, that’s Sh*t on a Shingle. And yes, inside, I’m giggling like a 10-year-old every time I type that).

When I was a kid, and would ask my dad what we were having for dinner, his answer was always either Sh*t on a Shingle or Hog’s Ass and Hominy. Funny thing, though, it wasn’t until probably high school that my mom ever ended up making it for us (the S.O.S., that is. I’ve still never had Hog’s Ass and Hominy), just because we’d never had it and we kept bugging her about it.┬áMy sister thought it was meh, but I liked it. Then again, I like most things with gravy, so there’s that. When Jay’s had it before, he’s had the version made with dried chipped beef. In my house, it was always made with ground beef. Which is how I made mine (although I tried to class it up a bit–as much as Sh*t on a Shingle CAN be classed up!).

Some Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt and pepper. Yeah, it looks like vomit on toast, but it really is good!


Especially on mashed potatoes (the preferred way my mom made it). I had 2 helpings, which I’m kind of regretting. I am thankful for elastic waists on flannel pants. Especially because I polished off the last of the cupcakes…All 3 of them. I don’t have to worry about them tempting and taunting me from the fridge anymore!

  1. We grew up with SOS, only we used Tuna! YUM!!! I Love it. I haven’t had it in years!!!! Mmmmm
