Hazelnut Hot Chocolate

Hazelnut Hot ChocolateEvery once in awhile, when I hit up the Starbucks inside the grocery store, I like to get something other than coffee. Especially now that I have to watch my caffeine consumption, thanks to my blood pressure. Once the colder weather starts to set it, one of my deviations is a Hazelnut Hot Chocolate.

Hazelnut Hot ChocolateOne night last week, I had decided that I was going to have a cup of cocoa while puttering around online (and yes, even a week later, I am STILL reliving my evening in St. Paul with The Replacements!), and I remembered I’d bought a bottle of Hazelnut syrup for a project awhile ago. I thought I’d make an attempt at a Hazelnut Hot Chocolate, just to see how it would turn out.

Hazelnut Hot ChocolateAnd it was perfect! I was afraid it might be overly sweet–I have a massive sweet tooth, but sometimes Starbucks’ beverages can be sickly sweet (like the Pumpkin Spice Lattes everyone’s going ape for right now). This, thankfully, is not. It’s just right. Just like the evening in St. Paul. This is one of those times I wish I was independently wealthy, so I could follow The Mats around for awhile.

Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

  • 2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder (obviously, the higher quality your cocoa, the better your hot chocolate will taste)
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 12 oz. milk, heated
  • 2 Tbsp. hazelnut-flavored syrup
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • 1 hazelnut creme-filled rolled wafer

In a large mug, whisk together the cocoa, sugar, and a pinch of salt.

Heat the milk either on the stovetop over low, or in the microwave (it should be hot, but just below boiling). Slowly whisk the milk into the cocoa mixture, making sure there aren't too many lumps.

Once all the milk has been added, whisk in the hazelnut syrup.

Top with whipped cream and a hazelnut creme-filled rolled wafer, if desired.

I am SO jealous of the guy who stood behind us at Midway. He’d flown in from New Jersey to see the St. Paul show, and will be attending the show in New York tonight. Lucky bum!!!

Hazelnut Hot ChocolateI guess I could console myself with another cup of cocoa, but it’s just not the same. You can bet, though, the next time The Replacements come within a day’s drive of me, I will be there!

Sharing is caring!
