Cheesy BBQ Chicken Burgers

Last weekend, I picked up a pound of ground chicken with every intention of making these chicken parmesan meatballs from Hungry Couple. I got lazy, though, and wound up making a chicken meatloaf instead. This week, I bought another pound of ground chicken, with the very same intention, but once again, I got lazy and instead, wound up making Cheesy BBQ Chicken Burgers.

Cheesy BBQ Chicken BurgersChicken burgers are a funny thing…For one, they don’t seem to hold together as well as ground beef patties. Of course, I guess I could’ve used an egg as a binder or something. Still, these turned out well enough that I actually finished eating before Jay!

Cheesy BBQ Chicken Burgers 2I had to stop myself from running out, buying another pound of chicken and making more.

Cheesy BBQ Chicken Burgers
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

  • 3/4 C ketchup
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. stone-ground mustard
  • salt & pepper, to taste
  • hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 lb. ground chicken
  • 1/2 C shredded cheese (cheddar, mo-jack, co-jack, cheddar-jack, mozzarella)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 4 buns

Whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt and pepper (and hot sauce, if using).

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, 1/4 C of the BBQ sauce, the cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Don't overmix.

Preheat a large skillet over medium heat.

Divide into 4 portions, and shape into patties. Place the patties in the preheated skillet and cook for 5 minutes per side, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center (internal temp 165 degrees F).

Serve on buns with remaining BBQ sauce.

Between these and last week’s meatloaf, I think I need to start stocking up on ground chicken…Unless of course, Smart Chicken wants to hook me up (yeah, I know, trolling for freebies is obnoxious. But that is the brand of ground chicken I used)!
