“It’s on my list…”

It’s been a busy few days…Work was a little hectic, due to some carryover from last week’s chaos. We also had our company’s Employee Appreciation Picnic, which was held indoors, since we were supposed to have storms that evening (they fizzled out, though). I’ve been with the bank 5 1/2 years now, so I received an award:

A new lapel pin (everyone gets a plain gold one when they start). I also got a certificate, and a bonus check (whoo hoo!):

And it was nice to also get a free meal. I like to cook, but I also like not having to cook!

Because I’m having a little get-together tomorrow night, I took a half day today, with the intention of starting the cleaning of the house, as well as grocery shopping, so last night I started making a list:

DMCGirl happened to also be talking about grocery lists on her blog today, which I found amusing, just because we both have “processes” for drawing up the weekly grocery list. I start mine by writing down things we need as I think of them (I keep a pad of paper on the fridge, because it’s easier to jot things down as I notice we need them), then I revise them based on what I want to stock up on, or what menu ideas I come up with. Then I write my items down in order of how I go through the store–I always start with produce, then meat, dairy, and whatever else we need. I try to stick to the perimeter of the store as much as possible, since that’s where the least-processed foods usually are.

If I have them and they’re for something I’ll actually use, I’ll take along coupons, but I don’t go out of my way for them. The trip was mainly for things for tomorrow night’s menu:

I don’t know why, but I was happy to see Roma tomatoes in the store, so I bought those instead of regular conventional tomatoes. And I got some other stuff:

I’ve got one dessert cooling on the counter, and I was thinking of making the other one tonight, but I think I’ll wait. Yet more severe weather is headed this way, so I’m figuring that either at some point, we’ll have to head to the basement, or the power will go out. I hope neither scenario plays out, but I am also tired, and I’ll have plenty of time tomorrow. The only other thing I did was to slice up some bread to dry out, since another dish I’m making for tomorrow is panzanella.

And thanks to my service award, I have myself a new camera–Not the Olympus I’d been considering, but a Nikon Coolpix instead. I hope to have learned how to use it well-enough to photograph things tomorrow night!
