I have been a coffee drinker for a long, long time. I think I was maybe a sophomore in high school when I began drinking it on a regular basis–Friends and I would hang out in coffee houses, drinking lattes and mocha javas and cappuccinos, discussing those things that seem so important when you’re 15 or 16. Back then, I could drink coffee until midnight, still fall asleep with relative ease, and wake up at a reasonable hour (ie., 9 or 10 in the morning).
These days, though, coffee has become my lifeline, my jolt into the Land of the Awake each morning. I only half joke that I do not function without coffee. I am one of those people who becomes an evil Mr. Hyde if I don’t have at least one cup of caffeinated coffee every morning. Yes, I’m addicted to caffeine, but I’m okay with it.
One one side, you have a 12-cup carafe, and on the other, you have a single-cup brewer. You can use the reusable filter, which holds ground coffee, or you can use K-Cups.
Including this, I now have a total of four coffee makers, as well as a French press. I had been using a different single-cup brewer (not a Keurig), and a drip coffee maker–The single-cup during the week, and the other coffee maker on weekends, when I drink more than two cups of coffee. I was excited to try the FlexBrew out, since it would free up more counter space, combining two appliances into one. Plus, while I love my other single-cup machine, discs for it aren’t readily available here in Brookings. Wal-Mart is the only store in town that carries them, and they only have two varieties. I have to either stock up whenever I’m in Sioux Falls, or order online. K-Cups are virtually everywhere.
However, there was a bit of a snag with the first machine I received. The carafe side worked fine, but the single-cup side wouldn’t brew. I contacted Hamilton Beach, and they sent me a second machine (I returned the first, in case anyone’s wondering). I have to admit, I’m kind of smitten with this machine.
The carafe is great for the weekends–I usually make about eight cups and “nurse” my coffee all morning long (the machine does have a two-hour automatic shutoff function). During the week, we’ve all been utilizing the single-cup side:
Jay’s actually found a coffee he likes, and in the evenings, we’ve been enjoying cocoa after dinner. The single-cup side is great, because the bambino can make himself some cocoa, and he gets a kick out of making coffee for Jay and me.
However, there are a few things I do dislike about the machine. When using the single-cup side, the heating plate for the carafe side gets hot. You can see in the photo, there’s a sticker on it that says “HOT” and it turns red when the plate heats up. I have to remind the bambino on occasion that he needs to be careful about that. I also don’t particularly like that I can’t fill up the reservoir unless I’m brewing a full pot–If you overfill the reservoir and you’re making just a cup using either a K-Cup or ground coffee, you’ll get an error message. Still, that’s easy enough to work around–We’ve been keeping a measuring cup next to the machine and we just brew 8 ounces at a time.
So overall, I am liking this machine a lot. I like that one machine will brew single cups, which means that Jay and the bambino can enjoy it too. And for the times when family comes to visit or I’m entertaining, I can brew a full pot using the same machine.
