“Take the skinheads bowling, take them bowling…”

I went bowling Friday afternoon for the first time in a couple years. Every year the bank sponsors a team for the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon, and this year, I talked Katie into signing up with me. Actual bowling skills are not necessary, thank the gods, because I possess none. In fact, I was indeed the crappiest bowler on our team, and although my ball managed to find the gutter more often than it did the pins, I did get two strikes. And I had fun. There was a selection of hats for the teams to wear in the event of gutterballs, so I spent most of the evening with this on my head:

Katie named it “Seamus.” Our team captain refused to wear it after his ball went in the gutter, so after that point, I decided I wasn’t wearing Seamus again until he did. And because of my love and borderline obsession with “The Big Lebowski,” I had to have a couple of these:

Assuming we weren’t too annoying, Katie and I might sign up again next year.

Yesterday, I was rather busy. Early in the morning, the bambino and I went grocery shopping, and I managed to stick within budget this time, even including a trip to Buttercrust for milk. After that I went off to get my hair cut, which was good because it’s been driving me bonkers lately! I still swear, when I reach my goal weight, I’m getting a pixie cut. Or I’m going to shave my head.

And after having lunch, I got to work on this:

Yes, it’s a homemade light box. I’ve been thinking of making one for a little while, and I managed to get all the necessary items for about $25. In fact, the most expensive item I bought were the pillow cases, and even that, I hesitated on, just because I was going to cut them up anyway. No matter. The lighting is about to get truly crappy for the next 6 months, so I figured now was as good a time as any to bite the bullet and make one.

The test shots didn’t turn out too badly.

I figured I needed to test it out with something more than just a cup of coffee, so I also decided to photograph dinner.

That’d be Orzo with Chicken-Apple Sausage and Dried Cranberries. I’d bought the orzo awhile back, and I can’t even remember for which recipe I was planning on using it! Someone at work leaves coupons on the break-room tables each Monday, and I pulled out a couple for chicken sausage, which I picked up earlier today.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out, considering this was a “just throw some stuff together” meal.

And I’d say the light box is working out well!

Orzo with Chicken-Apple Sausage & Dried Cranberries

Orzo with Chicken-Apple Sausage & Dried Cranberries
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes


  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 12 oz. chicken-apple sausage, cut into 1/2-inch discs
  • 4 C chicken stock, broth, or water
  • 2 C whole wheat orzo
  • 1/4 C dried cranberries
  • salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 C shaved Parmesan, optional


In a large saucepan, bring the chicken stock to a boil, and cook the orzo according to the package directions.

While the orzo is cooking, heat the olive oil over medium heat, and begin browning the chicken sausage.

Drain the orzo, and return to the saucepan. Add in the chicken sausage, dried cranberries, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss or stir to combine well, and serve topped with Parmesan, if desired.

In other news, we went to Katie and Ernie’s Annual Halloween Party last night. It was a lot of fun, as they usually are. Thankfully this year, we missed out on the horror that is “Thankskilling!
