Pictures and Polenta

I figured that since I spent the money on it, I should sit down with my new camera and start learning how to shoot photos in manual. Otherwise, I spent a lot of money just for a point and shoot. And I will say that even with some auto-settings, my pictures are vastly improved from where they were with my Nikon. Here’s a couple test shots I did:

(Yeah, I have a lot of random crap on my desk)

(Steak-Umms for lunch. I don’t think we’ve had them in years. They were delicious.)

I’m honestly amazed at the difference. I do also like the fact that (for beginners like myself) my camera will recommend the correct ISO for the shutter speed and aperture once you set them. One thing I have noticed, though, is that no matter what I change, it seems to always recommend ISO 200. I’m still figuring it all out, and now that I’ve discovered there’s a Dummies guide for my E-PL1, I think I’m going to order it one of these days.

We skipped out on Sunday dinner with Jay’s parents (hence the Steak-Umms), so I got started on the laundry and actually had it done and put away before dinner (that almost never happens!). I put off making the polenta (for the Baked Polenta with Sausage and Tomato Sauce), but got that in the oven at a reasonable time.

And while it was cooling in the fridge, I got started on the sauce that goes with it.

I tried taking some pictures while it was simmering, but they came out blurry. Oh well. I’m still figuring this all out! The sauce along with the polenta went into the oven for about 25 minutes. I let it rest for a few minutes while I took pictures:

Somehow, I get the feeling that this is not what Henry Hill had in mind when writing this recipe down. I think the next time I make it, I’m going to make the polenta on the stovetop, and let it cool after I spread it out on a baking sheet. It looks ugly, but it tasted fabulous.

I wish you could smell this. The mixture of tomatoes, garlic and olive oil is one of my favorites (along with freshly brewed coffee and homemade bread).

(This is just me showing off my newly-acquired photography skills…Which admittedly, ain’t all that)

I’m anticipating a large grocery trip this coming weekend, so I’m going to start my list now. And watch some Dexter.
