Wednesday Rambles

Crackers and Soup

Apologies for my absence last week. It was…a week.

For one, there was the Fall Rush chaos that kicked into gear. For another (you may have already guessed this from the above photo), I got sick.

Jay’s had some unrelenting cold ever since we came back from seeing Weird Al in Lincoln, and I finally caught it myself. I’m on week two now, but last week was rather miserable.

We also found out why the bambino still didn’t know his class schedule. The news broke that the middle school wouldn’t be ready in time for school to start. It’s been under construction for a good portion of the year, and they finally had to admit that the contractor/construction company was delayed.

There’s a bunch of bureaucratic BS about the superintendent being jerked around by the construction company, and everyone’s pointing fingers and whatever. But while the rest of Brookings started school last Friday, the bambino won’t start until after Labor Day. And even then, the construction will still be on-going.

Common sense might have led the school board to, oh, I don’t know, have a contingency plan already in place? I mean, construction projects are delayed all. the. time. I find it difficult to believe that no one bothered to think something like this could happen.

The bambino aged out of his afterschool program, and we’re not interested in sending him to the local Boys & Girls Club, so he’s been going to work with Jay. I’ve been working from home on occasion, until school starts up. He’s not yet quite old enough to spend an entire day home alone. But soon enough, he’ll be making that leap to being a latchkey kid.

Reese's Pumpkins

Since school is delayed, we spent the weekend outside Rochester, Minnesota with Jay’s extended family, for a reunion. I believe they’re going to try and get together annually, which is nice. I rarely see any of my extended family, but it’s good they’re keeping up those relationships.

I’ve been spending a lot of late evenings with my fountain pens and journal lately. It’s ridiculous, since I know I need sleep, but I always get this second wind right before I should be going to bed.

I assume I’m doing it for the solitude and quiet alone time. Since I changed shifts and gave up my Fridays off, I don’t have the luxury of spending the whole day writing in or decorating my journal pages.

Instead, I’ve been doing that after Jay and the bambino go to bed. I know I’m going to pay for it sooner or later, but it helps me decompress, especially right now.

I recently treated myself to some new inks, even though I don’t need them. Ferris Wheel Press added six more colors to their ink collection.

FWP Inks

Not only am I sucker for anything black and white checked or plaid, but I also love rainbows. These six fit in perfectly with the three I bought last year.

So far, I’ve only had the chance to test out one color, Lady Rose. I opted to write out song lyrics:

Crystal Wrists Lyrics

Which is my plan for the other inks in the collection. I’m a creature of habit, and did the same thing with the initial three inks. I just haven’t settled on what the next songs should be.

I also haven’t exactly decided which ink I’m going to use to write a letter to one of my twenty-something penpals. But at this rate, it’s going to be awhile before I have the chance to sit and write a letter or work on my journal. Perhaps this weekend!
